National Seniors Day
October 1 of each year is National Seniors Day, which coincides with the United Nations International Day of Older Persons and is an occasion for Canadians to celebrate seniors' profound contributions in our homes, communities, and workplaces.
As of July 2020, the population of Canada hit 38 million, of which 6,835,866 are over the age of 65, and 11,517 of them are centenarians. It is estimated that by 2030 one in four Canadians will be over the age of 65.
Time for Celebration
While there are many issues relating to senior's abuse, ageism, lack of support systems and healthcare that need to be addressed, we will not get into the issues. Today is a time for celebrating older adults and their contributions to our communities.
Seniors play a very important role in our families, communities and workplaces. They have spent their lives building our country, shaping our communities and contributing to our society and its successes.
A common myth about seniors is that they are a drain on society and do not add value to our communities. The reality is quite different. Seniors make a difference across Canada each and every day. Elder adults are working later in age, volunteering countless hours in our communities, caretaking our families, paying taxes and supporting businesses by purchasing goods and services.
Fun Fact: Did you know that seniors volunteer many more hours per year than any other age group in Canada?
Seniors are an incredible and diverse group of people, so let us not stereotype or marginalize them.ย Our communities and we rely on seniors for their contributions, support and participation. Let us celebrate them today and every day.
If you are a senior and reading this..........THANK YOU for being you and all you have done and will continue to do for our communities across Canada!
Happy National Seniors Day!
