The Flood Falls Trail fire that sparked southwest of Hope on Thursday, combined with a blaze at a wood recycling facility on the mainland, has initiated an air quality advisory on southern Vancouver Island, including Nanaimo and Victoria.

According to the province of British Columbia, the most recent fire activity is expected to create hazy conditions over the next few days and possibly lead into the early parts of next week.

While smoke is a natural part of the environment, exposure to it can negatively affect those with unlying respiratory conditions.

During Smokey Conditions

  • Stay inside if you have difficulty breathing.

  • Stay in an indoor space that is ventilated and cool.

  • Running a HEPA Filter Device can improve indoor air quality in the device's room.

  • Opening the windows can let in more of the polluted air.

  • If your home is not air-conditioned, consider going to a public place like a library, shopping mall, or recreation centre that is air-conditioned.

  • Avoid roads with heavy traffic.

  • Avoid areas with wood smoke.

  • Stay cool and hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

  • Manage any asthma or chronic respiratory diseases.

  • If symptoms continue to be bothersome, seek medical attention.

  • Maintaining good overall health is an excellent way to prevent health effects resulting from short-term exposure to air pollution.
